Clothing

The weather in Taranaki is so unpredictable. Dressing in layers allows you adjust to changing weather and or activity levels. Try and avoid cotton clothing and always carry a hat.

New Zealand also has some of the strongest UV rays in the world so when hiking above the treeline you’ll need to be prepared with sunscreen and sunglasses to prevent sunburn.

Shorts – quick dry material

Shirt – wool, polypropylene, nylon or polyester

Under layers, top and bottom – wool, polypropylene, nylon or polyester

Mid-layers – wool or polar fleece

Raincoat – waterproof, windproof

Warm hat, scarf and gloves

Sunhat and sunglasses

Extra underwear, shirt/lightweight jersey

Clothing to sleep in and wear around the hut

Tramping/hiking boots or firm footwear

  • Comfortable

  • Well broken in

  • Good ankle support for uneven ground

Recommended Gear List

Proper gear is the difference between a great trip and a miserable one. Please check the list to ensure you have the right gear.

Water: Ensure you have the capacity to carry at least 2 litres.

​Leave No Trace: Start thinking about how to minimize waste—we'll be packing out everything we pack in.

​Fitness: If you haven't been active lately, now is a great time to go for a few walks with your weighted pack to get your legs ready!

Essentials

Pack with waterproof liner – a rubbish bag used as an interior liner works great.

Drink bottle

  • 1 – 2 litres

  • Wide-mouth for easy filling

Sleeping bag, pillow and single sheet for mattress.

Kai for snacks on first day  

  • Pack more than you think you’ll need

Fully charged mobile phone

Toiletries

  • Insect repellent (Note: The tari will be providing some as well)

  • Sunscreen (Note: The tari will be providing some as well)

  • Personal medication, for example, antihistamine for allergy to wasp stings

Optional person equipment

  • Ear plugs for communal bunkroom

  • Walking poles

  • Camera
